Q&A with Kirsti Call

Kirsti Call is the author of the new children's picture book Cow Says Meow. Her other books include Mootilda's Bad Mood. She is the co-host of the Picture Book Look Podcast, and she lives near Watertown, Massachusetts.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for Cow Says Meow, and for the animals to include?

A: Animals saying the wrong sounds was a joke with my kids when they were toddlers. And I chose my favorite animal puns and that determined which animals were in the book.

Q: What do you think Brandon James Scott's illustrations add to the book?

A: Brandon's expressive, bright and textured illustrations make the book. He's absolutely brilliant.

Q: The Kirkus Review of the book says, "Children will giggle over the absurdly wrong sounds the animals make at each page turn as well as the kid’s growing exasperation." What do you hope kids take away from the book?

A: I hope kids laugh. And I hope they feel like it's okay to be different. It's okay to meow if you're a cow.

Q: What first got you interested in creating children's picture books?

A: I have five kids and I was reading picture books every single day. So when they were 8, 6, 4, 2, and 6 months, I started writing my own picture books.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I'm working on several board books, picture books, a chapter book series, a MG novel and a YA novel. I love writing all kinds of kidlit.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: Cow Says Meow has a meow-velous song.

And my book Cold Turkey is releasing on October 12. Also, I have several other forthcoming board books and picture books. Hooray! Thanks for the interview, Deborah!
