Scott Sollers is the author of the new children's picture book Adventures at Lake Omigosh. His other books include A Tall Tale. Also an investment banker, he lives in San Mateo, California.
Q: What inspired you to write Adventures at Lake Omigosh, and how did you create your characters Felix and Harry?
A: This and another dozen stories I made up when my younger daughter was about 6 or 7, 30 years ago. At that time she asked me to tell her a story at bedtime when I was saying goodnight and I made something up on the fly.
This went on for a few weeks and then she asked me to repeat a story I had one told her and I had forgotten it. So, after that, when I told her a story, I would write an outline of it so I would remember it. Eventually, I had 18 outlines and I hand wrote out and illustrated 13 of them.
Two things: I was an avid reader as a youngster and as a result had a vivid imagination. Also, as a youngster I attended meny summer camps with my family and as a Boy Scout. This story just “happened” in my mind and I named the main characters after my two male grandsons.
Q: Did you know how the story would end before you started it, or did you make many changes along the way?
A: I created these stories in my mind and then told them to my daughter and to my recollection, I had done my homework before bedtime and had a complete story to tell.
Q: What do you hope readers take away from the book?
A: Follow the rules!
Q: What are some of your other favorite books set at a summer camp?
A: I really don’t have any other favorite books, but as a Boy Scout, I earned many merit badges at camp for swimming, hiking, navigating, fire building, etc….
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I am working on my fifth book for publication called The Lost Locket about a little girl who loses an heirloom locket on the Golden Gate Bridge and a seagull picks it up and when the girl returns to the Bridge 30 years later, the seagull returns it.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: I am very blessed. I have had a wonderful career in municipal finance, I’m an avid golfer and am lucky to belong to some nice clubs, I have two magnificent daughters who married men who are intelligent, ambitious, and kind and three sensational grandchildren and I am loving working on my fifth book for publication. I have a great publisher and marketing team.
