Q&A with Rocco Smirne

 


 

 

Rocco Smirne is the author of the new children's picture book Rocco Keeps the Beat!: Music at the White House. His other books include Rocco at the White House Easter Egg Roll!. He is an elementary school student in Fairfax County, Virginia.

 

Q: Why did you decide to write about music at the White House?

 

A: I chose to write about music at the White House because music is everywhere, especially at the White House, it is a part of every event.

 

Q: How did you choose the specific people to include in the book?

 

A: I chose people who once performed at the White House and presidents who played an instrument that I like.

 

Q: What do you think John Hutton’s illustrations add to the story?

 

A: I like John Hutton’s illustrations a lot, I like the materials that he uses, and I also like that he fills the background with interesting details and doesn’t just draw a couple of things, he is creative.

 

Q: What do you hope people take away from your book?

 

A: I hope it inspires people to listen to more music and more kinds of music. I also hope people have a chance to go to the White House.

 

Q: What are you working on now?

 

A: My next book is going to be about the 250th birthday of America.

 

Q: Anything else we should know?

 

A: When I am not writing books I go outside to play, I like to draw, and I am also learning Japanese.
