Julie Edelman is the author of the new novel The Accidental Sisterhood. She also has written the book The Accidental Housewife. She lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Q: What inspired you to write The Accidental Sisterhood?
A: A breast cancer diagnosis. I had been wanting to write a romantic thriller but as we often do with things put it on the back burner. My diagnosis motivated me to fulfill a dream, realizing how life can change in a heartbeat and not to put off “dreams.” It also provided a wonderful distraction from the reality of my journey!
Q: Your character Jules has written a book called The Accidental Housewife, as have you--what did you see as the right balance between fact and fiction as you wrote the novel?
A: I call it fact-ion. The balance was fairly easy since the “facts” and my personal journey provided me with a wonderful canvas of life experiences to draw from, provide authenticity for character development and relatability! Same with Sean, albeit here too there is a good deal of blurring!
That is the beauty of writing fiction—you can take your real life, real people and weave them into a story and wherever your mind wishes to wander!
Q: The writer Jenna Blum called the book “a smart and humorous romp that blends Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies and Olivia Goldsmith’s First Wives Club with a Dexterized dash of Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City.” What do you think of those comparisons?
A: I think Jenna’s comparisons are spot on! Big Little Lies, First Wives Club, and Sex and the City all speak to the power of sisterhood and how women can come together in challenging situations without being catty or jealous of one another to do good—so to speak—That’s where the Dexter reference comes into play in The Accidental Sisterhood!
They don’t seek revenge but they do believe in avenging—-you’ll have to read the book to learn just how—trust me it will blow you away—so to speak!
Q: What do you hope readers take away from the book?
A: To trust one’s personal resiliency, guts, and the power of sisterhood. And to never give up on yourself and that even when a relationship ends or you face a life-changing detour, try to look at it as a gift you should learn and grow from. That finding humor in our journeys helps you enjoy the adventure!
Q: What are you working on now?
A: The Accidental Sisterhood Book Two!
Getting in running shape for fundraiser Miles for Moffitt to raise money for finding the cure for all forms of cancer.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: A percentage of all book sales will be donated to the Moffitt Cancer Center.
