Q&A with Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke

Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are the authors of the new suspense novel The Good Widow. Best friends for more than 25 years, they also have written the novels Your Perfect Life, The Status of All Things, and The Year We Turned Forty.

Q: You've noted that The Good Widow marks a departure for you, into suspense writing. Do you prefer that to writing women's fiction?

A: We do! It's fun, because we still get to delve into women and their complicated relationships, but in a suspenseful and mysterious setting.

Q: How do the two of you collaborate on your books? Can you describe your writing process?

A: We do it all online, since we don't live near to each other. Liz is in San Diego and Lisa is in Chicago. We tackle the chapters one at a time--one of us will start one and then we will pass it back and forth until we are satisfied. Then on to the next one!

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your character Jacks, and why did you decide on Hawaii as the setting for most of the novel?

A: We love Jacks! We wanted to be sure she was layered and complicated, with secrets of her own. We both love Maui, and thought it would be perfect! (and of course we wanted to take a "research" trip there!)

Q: Who are some of your favorite suspense writers?

A: Caroline Kepnes, B.A. Paris, Kate Moretti, Wendy Walker.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: We just finished Girls Night Out. A suspense novel about four women who travel to Tulum, Mexico, to reconnect after an estrangement but one of them goes missing.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: Just that we are so excited for people to read The Good Widow and to hear what they think!
