Q&A with Harper Kincaid

Harper Kincaid is the author of the new mystery novel A Midsummer Night's Scheme. It's the second in her Book Binding series, which began with To Kill a Mocking Girl

Q: This is the second in your Book Binding mystery series--has your character Quinn Caine changed from one novel to the next?

A: She has – and so has the series – the biggest difference being that Quinn’s cousin, the novitiate, Sister Daria, shares narration duties. They take turns between chapters.

In A Midsummer Night’s Scheme, Quinn still works for the bookshop, making and repairing books and journals. And while she’s thrilled she’s in a romantic relationship with longtime crush Detective Aiden Harrington, Quinn is still haunted by how her seemingly idyllic town has changed.

For Sister Daria, she’s still convinced she wants to become a nun, but other things-and people-have other ideas.

Q: How would you describe Quinn's relationship with her brother?

A: Oh, they’re close. It’s an idealized big brother-little sister bond, written from the point of view of an only child who would’ve loved a protective big brother. Honestly, Quinn and Daria have the more realistic sibling bond and they’re cousins.

Q: Without giving anything away, did you know how the story would end before you started writing it, or did you make many changes along the way?

A: I think most who write in the crime fiction genre know who’s going to be the killer and the ending in advance. I like to plan out the red herrings in advance. It’s more strategic that way.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from the book?

A: Cozy mysteries can have edge without betraying the heart and soul of this beloved genre. There’s a lot being set up in this book to reveal even more depth and changes for the main character – and the town.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I’m actually working on a TV treatment and a historical fiction novel – both more suspense than cozy. Can’t wait to share more with you when the time comes!

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: If readers want more Quinn and Daria, feel free to write me at HarperKincaid26@gmail.com or contact Crooked Lane Books inquiries@crookedlanebooks.com.
