Lisa Greenwald is the author of the new middle grade novel The Summer of the Fortune Tellers. Her other books include Fortune Tellers. She lives in New York City.
Q: Why did you decide to write a sequel to your novel Fortune Tellers?
A: I wanted to write a sequel to Fortune Tellers to show a little snippet of the girls' lives after they had reunited with one another.
Q: What inspired the plot of this new novel, and do you think Millie, Nora, and Bea have changed from one book to the next?
A: I think they've changed a little bit since the first book in that they're a year older and they have their best friends back. I wanted to explore what it would be like for them to all spend the summer together.
Q: How would you describe the dynamic among the three girls?
A: I would describe it as a very comfortable dynamic. They love to be together and have fun and at the same time, they can be very open with one another when they're struggling.
Q: The School Library Journal review of the book called it a “heartwarming and entertaining read that celebrates the joys of summer, the magic of childhood, and the enduring bonds of friendship...” What do you think of that description?
A: I love that description! I love reading books set in the summertime and I love writing about kids being kids. I'm thrilled that they find it heartwarming and entertaining!
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I'm working on a new middle grade series called Friend Group and the first one comes out in May 2026!
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: Hmmmm. Just that everyone should soak up the rest of summer and have fun and read as much as possible. Thanks for interviewing me!
