Q&A with Linda Oatman High

Linda Oatman High is the author of the new middle grade novel Somebody's Someone. Her other books include the Heather Whirl, Weather Girl series.

Q: What inspired you to write Somebody’s Someone, and how did you create your character Ruby?

A: I was inspired to write about mental illness by the fact that my youngest son has struggled for 10 years with it. Zach lives with me and so I walk this difficult journey alongside of him. It's heartbreaking when a brain disease has taken over someone you love.

A few important things that remain within my son are his big heart, as well as his genuine and pure love for others, and so I wanted to create a character who struggles with mental illness in order to show that even though its victims may have some "bad" character traits and make poor decisions that they are still lovable, kind, and important people.

Ruby's character came from out of the ether, as do all of my kid characters. They are usually all creative/artsy and quirky and large-hearted and forgiving.

Q: How was the book’s title chosen, and what does it signify for you?

A: I chose the title because every victim of mental illness and/or addiction is loved by others. They are all "somebody's someone."

Whenever I stop to speak with someone who is unhoused, I always ask their name and their story, in order to humanize them. Too many people act as if those on the streets are not worth their time, dehumanizing and demoralizing them.

Q: What do you think Yayira Dzamesi’s illustrations add to the book?

A: I think that Yayira Dzamesi's illustrations are stunning and so perfect for the story. I'm thrilled to have her be a big part of Ruby and Ruthie's stories.

Q: The author Barbara Binns said of the book, “Somebody’s Someone is a real treat for young readers, blending humor, love and friendship in the story of a twelve-year-old meeting the challenges of life with a mentally ill parent head on.” What do you think of that description?

A: I adore that description! There have been lots of great reviews, and I'm so happy with how this book turned out. Red Chair Press has done a great job, and I'm proud of our collaboration on this project.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I've recently finished walking a pilgrimage in Spain called the Camino de Santiago, in which I walked more than 600 miles in two months. I'm currently writing my first novel for adult readers, and it's set on the Camino.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: I have a new middle grade novel titled First There was Bird, coming in 2026 with Red Chair Press. Also, I'm available for school visits and appearances as far as airplanes can fly!
