Clairmarie H. Field is the author of the new children's picture book Willie's Gift. Her other books include Teddy's Search. She is also an educator.
Q: What inspired you to write Willie's Gift?
A: Willie’s Gift is a story from the heart. It is based on real-life experiences with my trained therapy dog and our visits to a retirement nursing home. I felt moved to write about the impact that a little dog can have on a lonely senior citizen, as well as the impact those seniors had on Willie as he realized his own gift.
Q: What do you think Maggie Sullivan’s illustrations add to the story?
A: Maggie‘s illustrations are expressive, detailed, and colorful, drawing the reader’s eye to each facet of Willie’s journey. Her ability to add expression to Willie’s face on each page allows the reader to quickly interpret Willie’s feelings.
Q: How did your background as an educator and reading therapist affect the writing of this book?
A: As an educator, I believe that the children’s book should send a message to the reader. I strive to focus on diversity and inclusion in my books which, in this book, focuses on the elderly in a nursing home. I look for themes that children can relate to, for instance feeling different, trying to fit in, and other challenges that children face.
Q: What do you hope kids take away from the story?
A: I hope that kids will think about the importance of taking time to listen to others. Most children want to fit in and Willie’s worry about the size of his ears gradually disappears as he learns how being a good listener is an important gift that he can give to the folks he visits.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I’m in the early stages of a book about Willie’s adopted sister Dolly, who learns to deal with a bad habit.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: In the fast-paced world of today, we sometimes lose touch with a simple act of conversation. I hope that, in this book, the importance of simply listening resonates with young readers. My book takes a child into a world of peace and reflection as well as service to others.
As an educator, I know how important the availability of quality literature is to young children. Books that offer rich vocabulary, a good storyline, and can teach a lesson are necessary in reading development. Diversity and inclusion are important aspects in education. All children want to feel included and respected.
