Q&A with Jimmy Craig

Jimmy Craig is the creator of the new book Are You Gonna Eat That?: The Essential Collection of They Can Talk Comics. His previous book is They Can Talk: A Collection of Comics about Animals. A cartoonist and story artist, he lives in Massachusetts.

Q: What inspired you to create this new collection of your cartoons?

A: I had a much bigger catalogue of comics to choose from compared to my first collection that was published in 2018. I think my writing and art has improved over the years and I’m excited to have a collection that reflects how much the comic has evolved.

Q: How was the book’s title chosen?

A: I originally thought of a handful of animal puns, but thought that a phrase an animal might actually say would be more fitting. It supports the theme that it’s based in reality and the comics could actually be real animal quotes.

Q: Of the various types of animals you draw, do you have any particular favorites?

A: Even though I draw cats and dogs the most often, I prefer to draw aquatic animals like sharks. They’re fun to draw and usually more interesting to color too.

Q: What first got you interested in cartooning?

A: I started reading The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes when I was really young. I’ve always loved cartooning and did it as a hobby long before I finally dedicated time to a specific series. When webcomics became really popular, I realized it was a perfect means to share some of my ideas.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I’m working on a new book that isn’t a collection of comics. I think I’ll always make comics, but there are a lot of other projects I want to pursue too, ranging from adult horror to children’s books.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: This book is for cat people and dog people. These opposing sides have somehow found common ground in my comics.
