Mia Sheridan is the author of the new novel The Fix. Her other books include All the Little Raindrops. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Q: What inspired you to write The Fix, and how did you create your characters Cami and Rex?
A: A couple of years ago when I was visiting a friend, we started talking about a tragic home invasion that had happened near her town. I'd heard of it but didn't know too many details.
After that trip, I couldn't stop thinking about how disturbed I was by the idea of a home invasion. To me, it's an especially horrific crime because it happens in what should be your family's sanctuary. So I started there, with a crime like that, and then the characters and plot began unrolling in my mind.
Q: How would you describe the dynamic between your characters?
A: Initially, Rex is extremely hesitant to get involved with Cami in any manner because of their history. Likewise, Cami wrestles with herself before approaching him for help because of what happened in the aftermath of the crime committed against her family. So they are both wary of one another, but that only means that their friendship (and later, more than friendship) is well earned by both.
Q: How was the novel’s title chosen, and what does it signify for you?
A: The crime committed against the Cortlandt family signifies what was meant to be a "fix" for those responsible. Of course, it becomes anything but, both for the guilty parties, and for the victims. As my team and I discussed title ideas, the simplicity and the irony of that particular title very much appealed to me.
Q: How did you research the book, and what did you learn that especially surprised you?
A: I actually had to do quite a bit of research for this one as there were a lot of technical aspects related to locating a person based on very little information.
I was especially surprised by how trackable we all are if we have a phone on us. And not just in the ways we all might have heard of (tower pings, etc.). It was challenging, but I also had a lot of fun figuring out how to get Cami and Rex exactly where they needed to be.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: Right now I'm working on a new and exciting project that is different than anything I've done before. I can't speak too much about it yet, but suffice to say, I'm having the time of my life creating this world. :D
I'm also editing two of my earlier romantic thrillers that will be re-published with Bloom Books and scheduled to hit bookstore shelves in the summer of 2026.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: Just that I adore my readers and am grateful for each and every one, but especially those who are here for both my light and dark sides. :D While The Fix is definitely one of my darker tales, I can guarantee an ending that will leave you with a feeling of peace and satisfying justice. Oh, and of course, as always, love.
