Q&A with Ruth Burrows

Ruth Burrows is the illustrator of the new Spotlight On books for kids. One focuses on Cynthia Erivo and one on Ariana Grande, who both star in the Wicked musical. Burrows is based in Sleaford, UK.

Q: How did you come to illustrate the Spotlight On series?

A: I have done a few celebrity-based books, I love drawing people and fashion in different settings, so I guess the art director was drawn to my previous work.

Q: How did you research the books, and what did you learn that especially surprised you?

A: I watched the film several times, of course, but also went down the internet rabbit hole, looking at the early lives of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. They are both strong women who have overcome obstacles to reach the top of their game.

Q: What process did you use to create the illustrations?

A: I used an app on the iPad called Procreate to sketch out the roughs for each scene. Once the roughs are approved, it’s on to color, and that is where the fun starts. I like to use a lot of layers, building up texture and pattern to create vibrant illustrations.

Q: What do you hope kids take away from the books?

A: That they can do or be anything they want, it just takes hard work and determination!

Q: What are you working on now?

A: Currently obsessed with painting large colorful abstracts!

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: I feel proud to have been asked to work on these books and can’t wait for them to be out in the world!
