Laura Dave is the author of the new novel Eight Hundred Grapes. Her other novels include The First Husband and The Divorce Party. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including The New York Times and Redbook, and she lives in Santa Monica, California.
Q:
The concept of synchronization appears throughout the novel. Why did you choose
to highlight this idea, and what does it mean for your characters?
A:
Synchronization is so much a part of winemaking - and so much a part of romance
- the characters' journeys naturally revolved around the idea of it…
Q:
How did you come up with the book’s title, and what does it signify for you?
A:
I wanted to pick a title that spoke to how much goes into winemaking - how each
glass of wine is an expression of so much work. I had never thought about
how many grapes were in a bottle - as soon as I found out how many grapes it
takes to make a single bottle of wine, it seemed like the perfect metaphor for
the world.
Q:
Do you usually know how your books will end before you start writing, or do you
make many changes as you go along?
A:
I never know how a novel is going to end. For me, that's the joy of
writing - that discovery. I write the first draft to figure out who the
characters are and thematically where they are going - and the novel's
world opens up from there.
Q:
What are you working on now?
A:
A novel about lies and secrets - and ultimately redemption. I'm also writing
the script for Eight Hundred Grapes for Fox2000 - it's exciting to watch Eight
Hundred Grapes have a new life on the screen!
