Q&A with Kelly O'Hearn

Kelly O'Hearn is the author of the Arcanum series, which began with In the Temple Shadows and continued with Whispers in the Forest. She is a tarot card reader.

Q: What inspired you to write the first two books in your Arcanum series?

A: I experienced a past life regression in 2017 as part of research when I was building my tarot business. That experience inspired me to investigate the past life loop I was told I am currently in using my tarot cards.

When we were all shut inside in 2020, I finally had the time to do just that. What was revealed was so breathtaking and expansive I knew I had to do something with the story. That is how Arcanum was born.

Q: How did you create your character Sarah, and do you think she changes from one book to the next?

A: Sarah has been a labor of love because, while she is a completely fictional character, she was created and channeled through the lens of my soul. Her story is in many ways my story although the details and players have been greatly changed.

Q: Did you know how the books would end before you started writing them, or did you make many changes along the way?

A: I have created all the past lives from beginning to end using the tarot. However, the actual translation from awareness to “paper” does demand adaptations along the way.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from the stories?

A: Mostly, I hope readers enjoy a complete immersive experience when reading the Arcanum books. They are for entertainment and delight most of all.

But the very nature of the story will illicit thoughts of the possibilities of past lives. Why are these specific people in my life? Why do I keep creating the same situation over and over again? I do hope it will open minds to the possibility of “more.”

Q: Will there be more novels in the series? What are you working on now?

A: Arcanum is currently a six-novel series. I am working on Book 3 now which takes places in the Vatican at the turn of the 16th century during the Spanish Inquisition. But due to the hard work and time demands I may wrap this up in four books!

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: My ultimate goal is to have this saga turned into a multi-season streaming series. Given the depth and breadth of the story, plus the beauty and richness of the multiple settings, I feel it would be an incredible visual experience.
