Jessica Marie is the author of the children's picture book The Mess Monster. Her other books include The Mess Monster in Love. She lives in Kansas City, Kansas.
Q: When you were writing The Mess Monster, did you know how the story would end before you started writing it, or did you make many changes along the way?
A: This book was originally about a room underneath the stairs. So to say it has taken turns would be an understatement. I never knew how the book would end but came to that decision with a meeting with my freelance editor, Kathy Macmillan.
Q: What do you think Nicholas Child’s illustrations add to the book?
A: His illustrations brought so much. He is very talented, and it was seen through each page. I had not seen many illustrations like his in the past and using him brought my visions to life for the manuscript.
Q: What do you hope kids take away from the story?
A: The importance of taking responsibility for your actions and how messes can lead to losing your most valuable possessions. Lucy risked her chance of being on the soccer team because of her messy room.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I am always working on another book for The Mess Monster series. Currently I have four available: The Mess Monster in Love, The Mess MOMster, and The Mess Monster Christmas. Currently I’m working on one based on The Mess Monster’s summer vacation.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: Besides The Mess Monster series I also have Finding My ROAR! Which is a great book to have about standing up for yourself.
