Q&A with Lee Adams

Lee Adams is the author of the new novel Love On Tour. She is vice president of promotion for Broken Bow Records, and she lives in Falling Waters, West Virginia.

Q: What inspired you to write Love On Tour, and how did you create your character Christine?

A: I was inspired by the many people who work behind the scenes in the music or entertainment industry, who never get the applause or adoration, but are an integral part of every person who makes it to stardom.

Christine is a mix of many women I have met and worked with who are talented, dedicated, and smart yet sometimes have to endure comments on their looks/clothing choice/body size, etc. I’ve seen them keep on going because they have a passion for what they’re doing, and their hard work leads to success.

Q: You’ve worked for many years in the country music industry--how did that background factor into the creation of this novel?

A: I fell in love with country music when I was 12 and discovered Willie Nelson music. I wrote my first book around 12 or 13 about a young teenage girl singing in a country band.

While I knew I’d never be a singer, I had a passion to be in the industry, and writing about it brought it closer to reality. My love for country music and writing led to me pursuing a career in the industry, which led to me writing Love On Tour. A full circle moment.

Q: Did you know how the novel would end before you started writing it, or did you make many changes along the way?

A: I had an idea, but as the characters developed the story shifted. I wish I could be a writer who does an outline and makes notes and knows exactly what’s going to happen. But I get an idea, have a thought as to where it’s going, start writing, and let the story take me to its conclusion.

Q: The writer Tracey Garvis Graves said of the book, “Set against the glittering backdrop of the Nashville music scene, this romantic and suspenseful story captured my attention from the first page.” What do you think of that description, and how important is setting to you in your writing?

A: Tracey is an amazing author who has been a huge inspiration. She’s also been open to me reaching out to her, first as a fan, then as an author. Her description is beautiful and it’s the blurb on the back cover of Love On Tour.

Setting is very important and when writing about country music, Nashville has to be the backdrop. It’s Music City USA! Home to the Grand Ole Opry. Music Row in Nashville is known for being home to the creative side of the business.

I’ve spent decades going to Nashville, gaining inspiration and knowledge. It’s where the fans of country music want to be as well and tourism is huge.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: First and foremost is my full-time job of promoting songs for Broken Bow Records. I’m always working hard to get hit songs played on the radio.

As for my writing, I’m very focused on promoting Love On Tour. Being a new author, it takes a lot of work to get your book known by the public. I’m also editing another book that I wrote a few years ago and have been working on ever since.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: I’d like readers to know how much they’re appreciated. When I think about people, especially those who don’t know me, taking their hard-earned money, precious time, and taking a chance on a new author, I’m overwhelmed. I want everyone who reads it to enjoy it. I’m an avid reader and understand the relationship between a reader and a book.
