Heidi McKinnon is the author and illustrator of the new children's picture book Floof. Her other books include I Just Ate My Friend. She lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Q: What inspired you to create Floof?
A: A lifelong admiration for fluffy creatures.
Q: Did you work on the art first or the text first—or both simultaneously?
A: It began with the title, then drawing, and from there, the story and illustrations unfolded.
Q: The Book Muse called the book “[f]illed with fun and whimsy.” What do you think of that description?
A: I think fun and whimsy is a wonderful description of Floof! I’d also add chaotic and unapologetic to the mix.
Q: Was Floof based on a particular cat?
A: Floof is an amalgamation of every floofy, unbothered cat I’ve ever met.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: I’m currently working on Shmoof, because clearly, one book about a fluffy companion wasn’t enough 😆. Shmoof follows a lovable doggo (called Shmoof) who just wants to join in on Floof’s fun—unfortunately, Floof isn’t exactly thrilled about it. This is a companion to book to Floof and will be published mid-year.
Q: Anything else we should know?
A: If you've ever experienced the perplexing art of a cat knocking something off a table, Floof might be the book for you. 😊
