Alysson Foti Bourque is the author of the new children's picture book Alycat and the Copycat, the latest in her Alycat series. She is also an educator, an attorney, and the founder of Expound Publicity.
Q: What inspired you to write Alycat and the Copycat?
A: Alycat and the Copycat was written to give readers the tools to be original, problem solve, and learn a little STEM.
When I was in elementary school, Science Fair day was something we all looked forward to. Naturally, many projects were the same. This was a time before Google, and we could only drum up ideas that we already learned or imagined. Most students had volcano projects that erupted and sometimes fell short of the dramatic ending.
Jealousy and envy were evident as similar things are often compared and analyzed as a whole, rather than individually. (I am a twin, so I know this concept all too well). During these moments, we are tested to exemplify grace, patience, and boundaries. All of these themes being important to the development of readers young and old.
Q: What do you think Chiara Civati’s illustrations add to the story?
A: Chiara shines in vividly portraying Alycat and friends for readers, capturing their emotional journey with vibrant hues and expressive details. She can make a volcano appear magical and pull you into the story as if you are there with Alycat and her friends.
Q: This is the latest in your series about Alycat--did you know from the beginning that you’d be writing a series?
A: Yes, when I wrote the first manuscript, I knew that I wanted to create a series that readers could grow up with and feel like they are part of Alycat’s world.
Consistency is key to reading comprehension development and having cohesive problem-solving themes provides dependable and coherent skills that become resources during storytime.
Q: What do you hope kids take away from this new book?
A: I hope readers will be reminded that sometimes two similar things can work better together than apart. So often we find ourselves frustrated with those who may imitate our actions and work. It is important to set clear boundaries, make sure we have all the facts, and give a little grace.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: Currently, I am finalizing Alycat and the Christmas Cookie Swap, which will be released in September. This book will also be produced as a musical with Wonderland Performing Arts, so auditions, scripts, and a whole lot of fun is taking place! I am also excited for an opportunity to pitch Alycat to Apple TV this month for an animated cartoon, so fingers crossed!
