Q&A with Christopher Hart

Christopher Hart is the author of the new book How to Draw Cute Mochi Animals. His many other books include Drawing Cute Animals Shape by Shape

Q: What inspired you to create How to Draw Cute Mochi Animals?

A: Mochi is an adorable art form popular throughout Asia, much like manga. With the Mochi style, it’s easy to create animals with cuteness and personality. The style is totally round.

Q: Do you have a particular favorite animal to draw?

A: Yes, my dog, Spencer, who is a Welsh Springer Spaniel. I post sketches of him all over social media. Unfortunately, he started posting pictures of me.

Q: Why do you think mochi characters are so popular?

A: Once you know the technique, a complicated animal is as easy to draw as a simple animal.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from the book?

A: I hope they come up with their own mochi character, and when they show it to their friends, their friends go, “Awwww!”

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I just finished two cartooning books and I’m deep into a figure drawing book.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: Yes, actually, here’s a good tip for beginning artists: when you draw something, ask yourself if there’s one part of the drawing you liked doing the most, like eyes, for example. That probably means you’re good at drawing eyes, so try to develop it a little more next time. Just a little. See what happens.
